Local knowledge for your 5-day trip
¥2000 gets you a card + ¥1500 credit. Every metro ride is ¥170–220 (fixed low price if you stay central). Skip single tickets and tourist passes.
Taxis cost ¥1000+ for 2 km; the metro is ¥170–200 flat. Walking between neighborhoods (Shibuya–Shinjuku, 20 min) saves money and builds memory.
Plan evening activities to end by 22:30. After that, taxis are your only option (surge pricing kicks in 23:00–05:00). A midnight bar means ¥2500 taxi home.
Tiny alley of 60+ grills. Sticks cost ¥100–200 each. Sit at the counter, order 5 sticks + beer, ¥1500 total. Locals outnumber tourists 3:1 by 21:00.
Japanese coffee culture is serious. After All Coffee and Fuglen Tokyo each have one signature drink. Both ¥800–1200, worth it over hotel chain coffee.
A ¥1200 lunch gives you grilled meat, rice, soup, pickles. The same restaurant charges ¥3000+ for the main at dinner. Eat big at noon.
Tokyo National Museum and teamLab on a Tuesday 10:00 AM = 1/5 the Saturday crowds. Same price, same experience, zero queues.
July is warm but manageable. Avoid peak hours 18:00–20:00 on trains and 12:00–13:30 for lunch. Eat at 11:15 or 13:45 instead.
Meiji Jingu at 09:00 is yours alone. Yoyogi Park at 17:00 is filled with joggers, families, and street performers—livelier but busier.
Shinjuku is the transit hub—trains to everywhere, neon energy, food alleys within walking distance. A 20-minute walk covers Meiji Jingu, Yoyogi Park, and Shibuya.
Arrive before 7:30 AM to see the temple and Nakamise alley without tourist crowds. By 10:00 AM it's packed; by noon it's unbearable.
Independent galleries, vintage shops, and izakayas off the main tourist loop. Far cheaper meals than Shinjuku and packed with working artists.
