Rome rewards slow exploration — skip the museum sprint and linger in piazzas. The food gets better away from the fountains.

Rome tips

Local knowledge for your 4-day trip

TRANSPORT

Buy a 48-hour metro/bus pass (€17)

Single tickets cost €1.50 each. A 48-hour pass covers all metro, tram, and bus rides—11+ rides break even. Skip the tourist hop-on buses; walk or tram between zones.

TRANSPORT

Cobblestones wreck wheels, use metro

Rental scooters are tempting but Rome's narrow streets and marble-smooth stones are treacherous. Metro Line A and B connect most sites; walking is the best option for short hops in the center.

FOOD

Cacio e pepe, not cream pasta

Roman pasta uses Pecorino Romano cheese and cracked pepper, never cream. Pane e Salame and Tonnarello excel at classics; overpriced tourist spots near ruins serve Alfredo—which is not Roman at all.

FOOD

Lunch at 13:00, dinner after 20:00

Romans eat late. Restaurants don't serve dinner until 19:30–20:00, and you'll eat alone if you arrive at 18:00. Lunch spots open from 12:30; many close 15:00–19:00 in summer.

TIMING

Museums close early in summer heat

Many close at 14:00 (especially small galleries) or operate 09:00–13:00 only. Plan big museums for morning; late-afternoon galleries risk finding doors locked by 16:00.

TIMING

Avoid midday (12:00–16:00) in July

Temperatures hit 35°C (95°F); monuments are mobbed. Start at 07:00–09:00, rest 14:00–17:00, then explore again 18:00 onward. Fewer crowds and cooler air.

AREAS

Stay or base in Trastevere or Centro

Trastevere is charming and walkable with family-run trattorias; Centro (around Pantheon/Navona) puts you 5–10 minutes from major sites. Both have metro access; avoid San Pietro if you want urban Rome.

AREAS

Skip Testaccio tours, eat there instead

Testaccio is a working neighborhood south of the center, 15 mins by tram. Locals eat here, prices are 30% lower than tourist zones, and the food is authentic Roman—Campo de' Fiori is the opposite.
