Local knowledge for your 4-day trip
A 7-day pass costs $33 and covers unlimited subway and bus rides. A single ride is $2.90; you break even after 12 rides. For 4 days of sightseeing, expect 15–20 rides.
Manhattan is only 13 miles long and walkable. Citi Bike (dock-to-dock bikeshare) costs $15 for a 24-hour pass. Subway is faster between distant neighborhoods, but walking lets you discover side streets and local shops.
8–10am and 5–7pm, gridlock makes taxis crawl. Use the subway during peak hours, or walk. Ride-shares (Uber/Lyft) surge prices by 3–4x, making a $6 subway ride cost $20.
Restaurants near the Statue of Liberty ferry and Times Square charge 40% premiums and serve tourists. Walk 10 minutes into Tribeca or SoHo neighborhoods for local spots at half the price.
New York's casual lunch spots (delis, noodle houses) are excellent value—$12–18. Save your budget for one or two special dinner reservations ($80–120 per person) where the food justifies the cost.
New York has direct access to Atlantic fish. Skip steaks and pasta at high-end spots; order oysters, lobster, or fresh white fish. They're the backbone of the restaurant scene.
The Met and MoMA are packed on weekends and after 4pm. Go Tuesday–Thursday 9–11am for short queues and space to browse. Morning_person schedule is perfect for this.
Arrive by 7:30–8am to walk, bike, or picnic without crowds. After 10am on sunny days, it fills with tourists and locals. Evenings (6–8pm) are second-best, with good light and fewer people.
NYC in July hits 85–95°F with high humidity. Drink constantly, visit museums or indoor spaces midday (12–3pm) when heat peaks, and save outdoor walking for early morning and evening.
Midtown is central for museums and high-rise viewing decks; SoHo offers walkable neighborhoods, galleries, and better local restaurants than Times Square. Both have solid subway access.
Times Square is packed with tourists and chain restaurants. The High Line offers real NYC scenery—sunset views over the Hudson, art galleries, and indie food vendors—all free.
Leave your hotel by 5:30am in July, walk the bridge as it fills with light, and grab breakfast in DUMBO. You'll have the entire span nearly empty before tour groups arrive at 9am.
